Controller’s Biography

Katharine Brophy joined Florida International University in January of 2017 as the Associate Vice President and Controller.  She has over 30 years of experience in higher education, holding numerous roles within both public and private institutions.  Ms. Brophy has responsibility at FIU for the oversight of the Accounting and Reporting activities, Student Financials, Tax Compliances, Financial Systems Support, and Procurement Services.  She collaborates with staff and departments across FIU to help the campus achieve effective and efficient financial stewardship and compliance with federal and state regulations and university policies and procedures.  Katharine strives to provide innovative financial leadership and business solutions that support the students, faculty, and staff. The Controller’s mission is founded upon integrity, collaboration, and exceptional resource stewardship to ensure FIUs financial strength for generations to come.

Prior to joining FIU, Katharine was the Associate Vice President of Finance at Montclair State University.  Previously, while in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland she held the position of Chief Financial Officer for the Georgetown University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, DC and worked for over 17 years at the Johns Hopkins University where she held the positions of the Divisional Business Officer for the School of Public Health and the Finance and Reporting Project Manager for the University and Health System SAP ERP implementation before leaving for Georgetown.

Ms. Brophy earned her undergraduate degree in Accounting from the University of Baltimore and her graduate degree in Business with an emphasis in Information Technology from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland.  In addition, she is a Certified Public Accountant.
